The birth story.
The Long Version
How an emergency birth, an open bar at a wedding and a mustache led to one of the greatest feats of the digital era.
Chapter 1: Wedding Fun
Like many brilliant ideas, Mandoula was born from a few too many drinks. It was a Saturday night at my cousin’s wedding and we had just sat down for dinner. My cousin’s husband, Matt was sitting across from me and was out drinking me 4 to 1. I decided the quickest way to catch up was to switch from rum and cokes to straight shots of tequila.
I don’t get to see Matt and my cousin Carey often because they live in France, so I really enjoy opportunities like this to catch up and the stories never disappoint. Tonight, the topic of discussion was the birth story of their second daughter. My cousin wanted to deliver at home however, the baby came so quick the doula had not arrived at the house yet, and Matt had to step up to the plate. Thankfully the baby and my cousin were fine and Matt got to add doula to his resume.
Chapter 2: Medulla Oblongata
Describing the event, Matt began to talk about how nice it would have been to have a doula there for him…a MAN-Doula. And there it was. Just like that Matt gave birth to Mandoula. At first we thought it was the alcohol playing tricks on us. This isn’t actually a good idea…is it? Then it hit us, our first idea for a logo, a picture of a brain, with the medulla oblongata highlighted, and we knew we had made it.
I didn’t give much thought about the idea for the remainder of the night because as the music got louder and the drinks got stronger, I couldn’t really give much thought about anything, so the idea just sat there in the back of my brain, resting in my medulla oblongata.
Chapter 3: Smog Awakens
I didn’t remember much from that night, and I definitely didn’t remember the idea for Mandoula…or so I thought. Fast-forward a few months and 12 positive pregnancy tests later, I find out I’m going to be a daddy. Being the go-getter and avid reader that I am, I immediately began to scour the interwebs for a blog that would guide me on my journey to becoming a competent father. I soon grew disappointed in my quest and the lack of a quality blog aimed at new and expecting fathers, and then the dragon awakened, Mandoula. This was my opportunity to leave my mark on the world and so here I am on a quest to inspire and raise competent baby daddies all across the world. Will you join me?
